Mary Eats Cake

There’s a whisper in the wind that at the base of the Dandenong ranges lays a quaint gem where one can dine on dainty treats whilst sipping on brewed potions. Enter into the realm of English elegance for an afternoon of High Tea at Mary Eats Cake in Montrose. Don’t be confused with their sister venue in Brunswick, which boasts a different menu! Mary Eats Cake is a collaborative project from 2 ambitious women Sarah de Witt (tea sommelier) and Jessica Hillbrick (pastry chef). A perfect match in high tea heaven sees the marriage of tea paired with the refined touch of pastry.

Sarah de Witt brings the world of tea to a whole new level that we didn’t even know existed. She artfully crafts all tea blends in-house to compliment each serving of food. Think tea pairing instead of wine pairing!

Where as, Jessica Hillbrick is the creative mastermind behind the pastries at Mary Eats Cake. She studied at the infamous ‘Le Cordon Bleu’ school in London, where she developed a passion for high tea. She has artfully perfected her own Vegan recipes for the Vegan High Tea as she believes Veganism is “the way of the future”.

Don’t let the inconspicuous exterior fool you! Inside the space has a quaint countryside charm infused with a touch of Melbourne style with a pink vintage bike that rests in the corner.

THE FOOD

Mary Eats Cake amazingly cater for most dietary requirements, even gluten free! They serve a full Vegan High Tea, but you must pre-book. High Tea is served at 1pm on week days and has 3 seatings on the weekend (10am, 1pm & 4pm). For $52 per person you are definitely provided with more than enough food to prevent you from standing up later. Otherwise you can order ‘a La Carte’ throughout the day without any booking.

The High Tea comes served on a tier stand with 3 layers of food, which takes you on a journey through the land of sweet to savoury. Feast your eyes upon chocolate & raspberry mousse balls, raw citric, rose water and coconut cheesecake and rich chocolate cake.

The scones are very impressive and come with coconut cream and jam. Who said you can’t be vegan and eat your scones too?!

The savoury layer comes with a mushroom and lemon bruschetta; a classic crustless sandwich with the surprising flavour combination of pear, eggplant and balsamic vinegar; a mini burger with a deep fried fritter, pickles and cashew cream; and an arepa filled with beetroot and topped with guacamole.

You won’t believe it’s all plant-based!

THE DRINKS

All the teas perfectly compliment the food and take you on a sweeping whimsical dance. Start with the berry mocktail, which is served inside a sugar encrusted martini glass. Then later sip upon blossoming flowers and lemon myrtle & ginger. Lemon myrtle is a beautifully fragrant Australian native, which holds it aroma longer than other citrus flavours.

Well hopefully in heaven there is Mary Eats Cake, so that one can indulge on a slice of splendour for eternity. We definitely recommend bringing your mother, a date or some friends for a pampered afternoon!
