Round Bird Can’t Fly

Round Bird Can’t Fly opened in Lilydale in September 2014. It was Laura and Evan James’ first café and they found that 30% of their customers were ordering vegan food. They decided to expand upon their offerings and create a separate vegan menu to cater to their many vegan customers.

They understood there was a large demand for vegan food in Lilydale and produced it. Their other cafe is the newly opened Blackwork in Croydon.

The Food

The vegan menu at Round Bird Can’t Fly alternates regularly. The blueberry hotcakes deliver a burst of flavour with passion fruit sorbet and coconut chia crunch. The winter tartlet provides impressive flavours with roasted cauliflower and mushroom mizuna.

Popular choices include the nutrition bowl which has a brown rice base and is dressed with a soy lime and ginger sauce, yakitori carrot and avocado. Jackfruit tacos are another hit on the menu. Other menu items include a zucchini and corn vegan burger, black bean tacos with jalapeno hollandaise, and a tofu stir-fry.

The café also stocks some vegan groceries such as jams and Hello Friend Foods vegan cheese.
