Ubuntu Vegan Cafe just opened this month (17th May). It is the first bricks and mortar eatery for the couple Elizabeth Richter and Nader Kajajo. The two foodie entrepreneurs also own the Vegan, Gluten Free food delivery service The Veggie Chef. Both owners are vegan and saw the opportunity to open a vegan eatery in Hawthorn after trying to find places to eat in the area.
The duo consulted with Maz Valcorza from Sydney’s Sadhana Kitchen to create the recipes. Maz has extensive experience with vegan food having owned Sadhana in both Newtown and Bondi. She is also the author of two books, Uncooked & The Naked Vegan.
The Hawthorn cafe, located right near the university was under renovation for 3 months, it had been closed for 18 months previously. The Ubuntu Cafe space is large and well decorated with polished concrete flooring throughout. There is also a big courtyard out the back.
Everything at Ubuntu Vegan Cafe is vegan. Amazing. The most popular items on the menu are the Triple Cheese Burger, Croque Madame, and the Big Breakfast. Our picks are also the French Toast (which can be made gluten-free), and the Loaded Sweet Potato Fries.
Ubuntu has come up with an egg yolk unlike anything else we have tried. Possibly a little bit too real. If you miss eggs though, give it a go!
Also on the menu is an extensive list of superfood lattes, smoothies, tea and coffee.
