5 Tips That Will Help You Stick To Exercise

  • Announce your intentions

Tell the world! Share with your family, friends, co-workers that you are wanting to exercise more and eat healthier and the details of what you’re trying to do. They can provide support, keep you accountable and maybe even join in!

  • Look at your environment

What could you do that would make it easier to go to gym before work or eat healthier? Packing a gym back the night before, putting your alarm in another room, having a lunch box packed. Set up your environment for success to help support your goals. If you are unorganised, find yourself snoozing all the time and making excuses you are only making it harder for yourself (make this a priority).

  • Be specific with your goals

You know S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely). If you say to yourself ‘I want to lose weight’, it is hard to measure the success for this, or motivate yourself with no deadline or explanation of how you’re going to achieve this. In comparison with, “I am going to go to the gym 5 times a week doing a combination of resistance and cardio, eat in a calorie deficit (of insert XXXX calories) to loose 500g on average a week over 12 weeks totalling 6kg” this has a clear plan of what you want to do and how you plan on doing it.

  • Get Social

It’s Monday morning and your alarm goes off for the gym (you want to press snooze and tell yourself you will go tomorrow) BUT you arranged to meet a friend to do a boxing class at 7am and don’t want to let them down? You catch my drift. Gym buddies = accountability and support, and they can make the whole experience more enjoyable and less daunting.

  • Find exercise you enjoy!

This is super important. If your goal is weight loss and you are slaving away on the treadmill hating life, what is going to happen when you reach your goal? Hint: you’ll stop. Exercise should be a celebration of all your body can do, not punishment for something you ate. Think about if you are an introvert or an extrovert. If you like the look of machines, free weights, classes, hikes, group training. Try different things and when you find exercise you enjoy (something magical happens – you start looking forward to going).
