Cactus Leather Debuts In Australia Through A_C Official, formerly Ahimsa Collective

Luxury ethical handbag brand Ahimsa Collective has rebranded as A_C Official, unveiling a monochromatic collection of handbags and accessories. The new collection is made from a new plant-based textile utilising the fibre of the Cactus plant, which is pipped to be the most Earth-friendly leather alternative yet.

The new collection is exclusively black and white and has a decidedly sleek aesthetic. It features nine styles, including a backpack, a tote and a slimline clutch with removable chain shoulder strap. Each is designed to be a seasonless, timeless classic, created with longevity in mind.

Titled ‘Raison d’être’, meaning ‘the claimed reason for the existence of something or someone’, founder and designer Tessa Carroll explains “This collection sums up precisely why we founded this business. The values imbued in each piece are a literal representation of the sustainable and ethical ethos at the core of my design work.”

I was brought up to understand the impact my sheer existence had on the planet, yet I chose a career in the fashion industry – the second most wasteful industry in the world. I never understood my purpose on this planet – until now,” says Carroll.

A_C Official is the first brand in Australia to be working with Desserto, which only launched in October 2019 and has subsequently won numerous Design Awards. Recently, the innovators were also named Finalists in the LVMH Innovation Awards. The sustainable leather alternative is derived from the cactus plant ‘Nopal’ or ‘Prickly Pear’ as it is most commonly known. Harvesting from their Mexican cactus ranch, the innovators are able to avoid soil degradation as plants are not removed from the ground and only the mature stems are used in the textile’s raw materials. The plantation regrows quickly with rainwater only, taking 6-8 weeks to be ready for harvest again, before cuttings are transported to their textile facility to be made into the patented bio-based leather alternative.

Founded in 2018, A_C develops ranges using innovative non-leather textiles and donates to carbon sequestration projects through an impactful Social Enterprise model. With an emphasis on transparent supply chains, the business is built with the circular economy top of mind and offer a recycling buy-back program as well as plans to eventually offer a market-place for pre-loved A_C items.

The new Raison d’être’ collection opens for presale Tuesday 20th October exclusively at www.ac-official.com.
