Tasty and nutritious meals. That is what you get at Home Vegan Bar in Docklands. Located next to one of the busiest areas in CBD, Southern Cross Station, the bar offers ready-to-go salads and hot options such as curries and soups.
“We never reheat nor deep fry the meals,” says Robin, the owner of Home Vegan Bar. The soups and curries are made in small batches every day and kept on a constant heat from the electric stoves. The whole menu is plant-based (including milk used for coffees). Robin takes a medicinal approach to food, he developed a plant-based menu because he strongly believes that we should put more thought into what we’re eating; after all, food has to nurture our bodies.
Although this place is great for a quick takeaway meal, because we are always in rush, they have put all their heart into reducing food waste and creating a sustainable environment. Initiatives like ensuring all the takeaway containers are disposable, loyalty cards made out of sugar cane (buy 9 juices/coffees, get the 10th for free). You get $1 back when you bring back the juice bottle.
This all started well before Home Vegan Bar, back in 2014 when Robin opened his first pressed juices business. They now offer a full range of juices, smoothies and milk. A lot of people take part in their cleansing program when you receive a pack of juices and a list of which nutrients you’re nourishing your body with today.
A lively cafe with healthy all-day breakfast, quick lunch options and organic coffee with a good selection of plant milks only, then the place transforms at night. Dimmed lighting, big hearty meals such as green risotto or taco bowl go well with a glass of wine. Vegan meatballs go down a treat, as do their pies.
“We have our wine on tap. There are a few reasons why. It’s a good way of eliminating the glass bottles that are going to landfill. At the same time, the wine stays fresh because there’s no oxidation unlike when you have to open a bottle.”
With happy hour from 4 to 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays, beautiful vegan food (meatballs are to die for!) this restaurant is definitely worth checking out.
