Walk through a laundry and enter into a fine dining experience like no other
EnterViaLaundry is an exclusive private dining experience that you would only find in Melbourne. As the name suggests, you enter the ‘restaurant’ via the laundry door. The location of this amazing fine dining is unexpected, a suburban home in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
On a cool evening, it is nice to be greeted with a warm glass of mulled rum, lime, kumquat and ginger beer.
Once inside, you are seated at a 6-seater dining table. Making this a perfect experience for a group of friends or an interesting date night where you get the chance to meet some new people. On offer is a 9 course vegetarian or vegan degustation, with all dietary requirements looked after and matched wine.
Helly Raichura is the Chef and creator of EnterViaLaundry. By day she is an HR Advisor for an IT company, by night she is a fine dining MasterChef. Inspired by the food at Lume in South Melbourne, Helly wanted to learn the ins and outs of the kitchen. She had a very short-lived trial at Lume. She then put herself out there and asked Gaggan if she could be a trainee in his kitchen. Gaggan, in Thailand, has been the No. 1 restaurant in Asia for 4 consecutive years, and features in the top 50 in the world.
The food is the West part of India inspired (Helly’s birthplace is Gujarat) but with a modern twist. Helly uses a lot of native elements and grows the majority of the ingredients herself. Migrating to Melbourne in 2007, Helly has always been vegetarian but felt, when dining out, that the food is substituted, rather than thought of with vegetarians in mind.
Preparation takes a week for each dinner, and you can tell why. With dishes like “cheese, wine and crackers”, which sounds ordinary, but it is any but that. A small ball of spicy curry flavoured vegan “cheese”, paired with homemade dehydrated paper thin lentil crackers and a “wine” made from tomato concentrate to trick your mind and taste buds.
The thought behind each dish comes through with each bite. With complex synergies between the flavours of each vegetable and spice. The strawberry course is an exceptional blend of flavours, with a leek and garlic cream, charred eggplant on pastry, topped with pickled hand-picked white strawberries, lemon zest, pickled lemon salt, lemon zest, and river mint. This course also lends a sense of family into the evening, as Helly explains how she picks the white strawberries with her son.
A stand out dish is a traditional bread made with chana dhal on a bed of smoky eucalyptus, reminiscent of camping. With a dipping bowl of macadamia oil and grape juice reduction with spices that will leave you wanting more.
In the next 5 years Helly sees the 9 course degustation expanding into 20 or more dishes, of which are already planned out in a book.
Potato | FungiThe final course of the evening includes 3 different tea’s. Inspired by India, Australia, and Thailand.
