Ecofit is the first personal and group training studio in Melbourne that is dedicated to being sustainable. Not only in its environment, but in its training practices. For 4 years Michael Farnham had wanted to start his own Personal Training studio and was just waiting for the right opportunity. That chance came in mid-2018 when EcoFit was born. Working with his long term partner, Hannah Thompson, to create an eco-conscious space.
The eco-friendly aspect of the business was always going to be a large component of what they started. Both Michael and Hannah live their own lives as sustainable as possible, by adopting plant-based diets and living mindfully through there personal lives.
“It was natural for us to bring this together, living a sustainable lifestyle and portraying that through our business.”
Michael has been a personal trainer for 4 years. After studying Sustainable engineering at university, he knew he wanted to create an impact in whatever career he pursued. Ultimately this is through personal training. While Hannah completed her Masters in Nutrition and also completed the eCornell plant-based nutrition certificate which was created by T. Colin Campbell, the man behind The China Project.
Both are passionate about creating change in peoples lives, and after switching to a plant-based diet themselves 5 years ago, they saw the dramatic impact it had on not only their bodies but their overall mindset.
Ecofit has already been rewarding for the pair. The hard work and long hours have seen the growth of their sustainable business and impact on many of the now regular customers.
How Ecofit are sustainable
The gym and studio have an array of sustainable elements. From recycled rubber flooring to an online booking system to prevent any paper waste. Even the cleaning equipment is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. They also choose businesses that they partner with very carefully, ensuring that their ethos for a sustainable planet is upheld in the organisations they work beside. Recently they became a member of the 1% for the Planet initiative, where 1% of profits are dedicated to eco projects around the world.
But it’s the holistic approach which people have falling in love. Practising yoga, mindfulness, stress release, and offering insight with their internal nutritionist, Hannah, who specialises in plant-based nutrition. They also hold group training classes including HIIT and BootCamp. While Michael has specialties in boxing.
The future holds guest speakers in the areas of stress release, meditation and many other areas of holistic health. But watch out for the 6-week challenges which run throughout the year. These challenges are designed for high impact but also creating momentum for the future and creating habits that can be incorporated into your everyday life.
Or, you can try the 4-week plant-based challenge to help kick start your plant-based journey.
