If you’re looking for a fried vegan food there’s no other place that’s gonna give you exactly what you’re after than Fried Hustle. Ellie Marin of food truck royalty with Cornutopia decided it was a good time to open a brick-and-mortar store selling fried food at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Needless to say, there were some hurdles in opening up this fried food joint, however, the all-female team tackled them with ease and have designed a menu that’s catering to everyone. With Zoe Horn leading the kitchen to offer not just a few good vegan options but plenty of great vegan fried food, plus there are also great kids vegan options. They also make sure that the vegan food is crumbed in a gluten-free batter.
The interior of Fried Hustle is subtly nostalgic but yet vibrant through their deliciously purple tables. It puts you at ease immediately, whilst making it almost impossible for you not to want to photograph everything.
For me, the first thing that comes to mind when you thinking fried food is loaded fries or nuggets. Fried Hustle does this in abundance with one of Melbourne‘s best southern fried cauliflower bites available which are also gluten-free. They also have a range of tofu nuggets which all can be added to the top of your loaded fries, with mozzarella, gravy, and spring onions. There’s also the option to have Korean loaded nuggets made from tofu which have the signature southern fried coating with sriracha sauce, smoky barbecue sauce, and topped with spring onions and sesame seeds. It is something not to be missed.
If you’re a burger kinda person you’re not gonna be let down with any of Fried Hustles burgers because they can all be made gluten-free and vegan. Plus the option to add eggplant moons on the side with some southern fried cauliflower is always a win.
Ironically though the best thing to come from Fried Hustle is not fried. They have ice cream sandwiches which are scoops of blood orange or vegan vanilla bean ice cream compressed between double fudge chocolate chip cookies that are also gluten-free and vegan. I shit you not it’s worth the drive just for that.
