You know you are doing falafel right when you serve over a hundred a day. Just Falafs opened in 2017 and was met with instant support in the surrounding neighbourhood. The mother/son team of Teresa and Troy Christou wanted to bring a sense of New York falafel bar to Melbourne and the result has created not only a relaxed environment but a cult following.
You will be hard-pressed to walk into Just Falafs without seeing several people inside chowing down on their delicious falafel. With the fryers turning out batches of the fresh balls, while massive bowls of salad fill the front display cabinet. The majority of which are always vegan, and manage to pack an incredible amount of flavour, without being over-complicated.
The falafel is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, maintaining the perfect consistency without it becoming goopy. This is indeed the highlight at Just Falafs. However, if you tried the salads and pickled vegetables that are packed onto plates without trying the falafel first, you would be in heaven. It’s just the balls that send it over the top.
My pick would be the Harissa plate with falafel. Served with their signature house-made spicy harissa, pickled purple and white cabbage, tomato and cucumber Israeli salad, served on a bed of hummus and topped with pickles and tahini. It also happens to be gluten-free and is one of the best all-around dishes you will try in Melbourne.
To note is the Vegan Date Night Pack, which comes with eight falafels, fresh hummus, pitas, salads and drinks. And the Big Awesome Family Pack, which is huge and well worth ordering when you have friend for dinner or just want to sample everything with enough left over, to feed you for a week.
