La Svolta in Hampton feels like a traditional Italian restaurant that just happens to be in Bayside Melbourne. This could be because Valerio arrived in Melbourne from Tuscany just 12 years ago. Owners Valerio Calabro and Pino Russo opened La Svolta in 2010, they won 2012 Best Pizzeria at the Melbourne Pizza Festival. So these guys know their dough. Just 3 weeks ago Valerio introduced vegan cheese to the kitchen. You can now substitute the vegan mozzarella from Follow Your Heart to your pizza and pasta. Let me tell you, it tastes like the real deal. La Svolta will be slowly adding in more vegan items and are looking at introducing vegan ‘nutella’ from Local Craft.
Here are just some of the delicious vegan options you can try Spaghetti Alla Norma – fried eggplant with cherry tomato sauce & vegan cheese (our top pick!), Gnocchi Sorrentino – vegan mozzarella & Napoli sauce baked in the wood-fired oven and Vegan Porcini Mushroom Risotto. Also, you can swap out the cheese on all of the veg-friendly options. We suggest the Margherita or the parmigiana with tomato, eggplant, cherry tomatoes & basil.
