Osteria Italiana is a traditional Italian restaurant located in Clifton Hill, not to be confused with their smaller sister restaurant in the city.
Osteria Italiana is owned and operated by Sicilian born Alessandra d’Angelo who came to Melbourne for her 2 children when they were younger. They are also partly the influence behind the vegan menu. Both being vegetarian, d’Angelo wanted to recreate the traditional dishes that they were used to. And she has done just that!
The food is all Alessandra’s vision but the amazing chefs create all the recipes with the vision in mind. Apart from the vegan menu, the wine list features mostly vegan-friendly wine, a big win(e)!
Osteria Italiana is the perfect place to bring your non-vegan friends and family. Although they would not be able to tell the difference between some of the dishes like the calamari, which often gets sent back to the kitchen by vegans because they think they have received the wrong meal.
The restaurant is dimly lit and expansive, it also has a smaller upstairs space perfect for events and private dinners. This is not the first eatery owned by d’Angelo who ran a lunch & dinner pub in Palermo and sold in 2007. She has big plans for the future including trialling a small breakfast menu and would one day love to have a vegan wedding venue.
On the vegan menu, it features dishes such as a spinach and bechamel cannelloni, meat balls, fluffy house-made gnocchi (also available gf), and an eggplant dish that you can find in the Edgars Mission cookbook, Cooking with Kindness all of the bread is made onsite in keeping with the traditional italian cuisine, even the gluten free bread!
