You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t love good traditional souvlaki. Until now, it has been almost impossible to get vegan souvlaki in Melbourne. Enter stage right, Saki Souvlaki.
The Karamitsios family have been serving traditional Green food for over 20 years. Vicky Karamitsios and her husband Saki have owned and operated stores all over Melbourne, including side by side shops on Chapel Street. So, you could say they know good Greek food. Their kids Peter and Katerina now also work in the business in Southside Moorabbin. Right across the road from the DFO shopping centre is some of the best southside vegan comfort food you will find.
Saki Souvlaki opened as a cafe 11 years ago and morphed into its current state 4 years ago. More recently the entire family switched to a vegan diet after some health scares. Vicky was posting photos of her delicious homemade vegan food on Instagram and people started asking where they could buy it. Now, Saki has a full vegan menu available. Think big saucy souvlaki on local made pita bread with dolmades, dim sims, falafel, ‘chicken’ or veg, and juicy burgers you can hardly fit in your mouth.
On the menu are vegan spring rolls, dim sims, dolmades, dips with pita and handmade filo pastry. Saki Souvlaki support local businesses and work with suppliers to veganise the pitas, burger patties and filo pastry.
The increased vegan orders have allowed Saki Souvlaki to install a dedicated vegan grill and dedicated vegan deep fryer. Allowing them to make plenty of incredible food, without the hassle of cross contamination.
Must try: Smokey Burger, layered with a ‘beef’ patty, bacon, onion rings, tangy mayo and smokey BBQ sauce.
