The Independent Gembrook opened in September 2014 in what once was a former garage. The building has been restored and the restaurant is designed by architectural firm Gordon & Henry. The large venue seats 100 guests and often sells out all seats on their vegan only nights. Keep an eye out for these special events on their facebook page.
Outside you will find a large courtyard and a cubby house, making it family friendly.
Head Chef Mauro brings his Argentinian culinary experience to the table, the food is meant to be shared, so order a few things off the Picada (to pick at) menu and some off the Mas Grande (bigger) menu. Mauro has travelled the world and worked in 5 star restaurants in Argentina and Michelin star restaurants in London. He has been in Australia sharing his amazing food since 2003. They are now lucky enough to have him in the quiet town of Gembrook, opposite puffing Billy.
The Independent Gembrook also holds large events, like weddings, with the full vegan menu available for these events.
The vegan menu at The Independent offers 11 dishes and dessert. You can choose a six or eight course with optional matching wine. Or just order the dishes on their own. We recommend starting with the potato & rosemary Empanada and Palm heart ceviche. Then the Zapallo which is roasted pumpkin, maple and macadamia, the charred broccoli with chilli cashews and avocado and the Humita sweet corn & pumpkin stew, which is Chef Mauro’s favourite dish. However, they are all great dishes, that have been passionately put together, so nothing on the menu is a bad choice.
