When you think American style diner, you think fried chicken, fries and burgers. Newly opened This Borderland offers all of those things for vegans and omnivores. Once you walk in the door at this small Preston eatery, you feel like you are stepping right into a classic American diner. Complete with cosy booths and classic rock music playing in the background.
Owner Xavier “Ox” O’Shanassy designed and built everything inside from the custom hexagon shaped lighting to the booths and the kitchen. Everything was designed with purpose, for example, each booth has a powerpoint and USB charging ports.
The self-proclaimed Jack of all trades previously cooking, making cakes and even driving forklifts. Also a trivia whiz, where he won a good portion of the funds from his winnings on Million Dollar Minute to launch This Borderland.
Ox is also the Chef at This Borderland, but it took a lot of time to craft his menu. The vegan Fried Chicken recipe took 18 months to develop before opening. He has always loved cooking, especially desserts. Which originally was thought of, a complete dessert bar, but the food at This Borderland is comfort food. Feel good food, without the need to be pretentious.
Every item on the menu has a vegan option. But let’s start at the sides, huge deep fried pickles, beer battered onion rings and the 4 (vegan) cheese poutine. The mains will have your mouth watering with 3 burgers in potato buns, your choice of Seitan beef or chicken patty. Or grab The Charlotte with 2 pieces of fried ‘chicken’ apple slaw, pickle and chipotle mayo.
Enjoy some classic American cherry pie for dessert, if you still have room.
