Tonkin restaurant on Smith Street opened almost 2 years ago by Tan Tran. It is the first business for Tan who worked in I.T. for a decade. Tonkin Bar & Grill is set in a modern, bright open space with South-East Asian touches. Inspired by his mother’s cooking, Tan had to learn to cook for himself when he lived in London because traditional Vietnamese food was hard to come by. He learned some great recipes and eventually opened his own restaurant. The vegan dishes are also inspired by his parents who have been vegetarian for a few years. Tonkin transports you to a place where traditional Vietnamese flavours are embraced in delicious small plates and accompanied by signature cocktails with an Asian twist. Conveniently located on Smith Street Collingwood, it is a great place to meet up with vegan or non-vegan friends.
There is a vegan option for just about all of the dishes, starting with BÚN, vermicelli noodle salad bowl with your choice of vegan topping (spring rolls, vegan duck or tofu), Tonkin has vegan sides, 2 vegan Pho options, and a must try vegan duck bao bun.
The most popular vegan items on the menu are the Vegan Duck Pho and the Vegan Duck Bao. There is no MSG used in any of the cooking at Tonkin (commonly used in Asian cooking to get that umami flavour).
