After the popularity of their mobile food truck which began in 2015, Kat and Michael of Woking Amazing decided to open up a permanent restaurant in December last year to fill the demand from hungry customers. The space in Collingwood is cosy and casual, filled with plants and greenery with indoor seating and an outdoor courtyard at the back.
All the food created by chef Michael is delicious and filling. On the menu are lots of comfort style meals including fish and chips, crispy chickn katsu curry, caesar salad, tempura squid and fluffy BBQ pork buns. The focus is on texture, flavour and creating inventive and tasty plant-based food that stands out from the rest. Everything from the mains to the sauces are full of flavour. They also have a creative drinks menu including a rich hot chocolate with marshmallows!
The food is mostly of Asian influence, but with Michael’s English background the rotating menu includes touches of English classics like the popular tempura fish & chips with mushy peas. The “fish” being soy-based and made with nori, is served with chips, tangy tarte sauce and wasabi mushy peas. It can also be made gluten free.
Kat and Michael consider themselves to be “food activists” creating delicious plant-based food to show the world you definitely don’t miss out. Kat has been vegan for 22 years and Michael for 6. Between them they have 50 years experience in hospitality, so they know their stuff.
Woking Amazing is definitely worth a visit, perfect for those winter comfort food cravings!
They also still run their mobile food truck at various events and food truck parks around Melbourne, including The Preston Food Truck Park and Welcome to Thornbury.
