Arlo

The Details

It’s all about family at Arlo in Brighton. Owner and operator Louis Foundling works with his wife Bernie and wandering the small dining area with an infectious smile is their daughter Rosie. Sitting down to sip on a coffee you get an extended sense of family. As with every door open, you hear Louis call out from the kitchen to welcome them by name. The unmistakable aroma of fresh bread fills the space, giving you a sense of comfort and familiarity. Lining the top of the open kitchen are bottles of preserved carrots, onions, and jars of spices. The glass cabinet showcasing the full and half loaves of bread for the day together with muffins and biscuits.

Arlo is tucked away down a walkway next to the Middle Brighton Train station.  An artisanal hidden gem amongst the hustle and bustle of Church st, with a simple and clear mission. To bring wholesome and delicious food to each person. You shouldn’t expect to find an extensive menu at Arlo, but what they do, they do very well.

The Food

You can get Avo on Toast at most eateries in Melbourne, but the Arlo thick-cut, fresh bread, topped with an seasoned avocado mix, tomato, sprouts, fresh dill and sprinkled with their signature dukkah mix is something special. Couple that with fresh salad bowls with the option to add vegan haloumi drizzled with a balsamic reduction and thick-cut bread, or toasted corn chips for the gluten intolerant. The flavours pair beautifully, and with the addition of their housemade hummus, which you can get the recipe from their facebook page, it oozes with texture and vibrancy.

Leaving the best for last, the falafel wrap is what the regulars keep under their hat. A large toasted wrap filled with hummus, falafel, salad, and a huge pickle tucked into your brown paper bag. It is without a doubt, worth traveling for.
