Located in Camberwell, The Old Garage is a cafe built for the community. The rustic bricked cafe encapsulates an ‘all are welcome’ atmosphere, from the wall of polaroids with every dog from the community to a menu designed for flavour above all else. The Old Garage owners Prince and Rachael have made plant-based dishes an essential item on the menu, where flavour takes poll position.
With head Chef Harley creating traditional cafe elements, from the classic big breakfast to brekkie burgers and toasties. It’s all the food you want to indulge in, but made completely plant-based, without any compromise on flavour or texture.
The team also work closely with dog rescue centres in the area, fostering, caring and advocating for animal rescue. Evident from the collection of polaroids on the wall entering the kitchen, which is about to expand to another wall within the cafe, as the community of dogs grow at The Old Garage.
The newest endeavour from this establishment is Old Garage at night. Open every Friday and Saturday night, the rustic bricked cafe transforms their usual brunch/lunch menu to exquisite vegan tapas, swapping coffees and lattes to delicious cocktails. Say hello to the new hottest spot for late-night drinks and tapas.
The menu features classics from Eggplant Parma to Arancini Funghi, Mushroom Gnocchi to Popette Al Sugo to decadent desserts like Tiramisu (which we highly recommend!) because let’s be real, there’s always room for dessert! All dishes are curated by head chef, Harley Salanitri (previously head chef at the 400 Gradi Group) who isn’t afraid to spice and flavour dishes accordingly.
Let’s talk scrambled tofu, because this is usually a good benchmark for any cafe serving vegan options. If you can get scrambled tofu right, then it’s generally safe to say the other plant-based dishes will be great too. The Old Garage do their scrambled tofu a little different, in their own way. But it works, on so many levels. Creamy, with hints of cheesy from the nutritional yeast, perfectly seasoned and ready for the big breakfast and brekkie burger. Which is the perfect construction of bun, crispy fried hash brown, double bacon rashers, a healthy heap of scramble tofu topped with tomato relish.
We could keep talking about the other regular breakfast options but when you see breakfast tacos, a moment needs to be taken. After a few breaths, you can now think about the three soft tortillas filled with scrambled tofu and hash mix, finished with gorge jones and fresh lime, and if that isn’t enough to get you heading to The Old Garage then think about the decadent and buttery vegan mushroom toastie that will leave you more than satisfied.
