Almost 20 years ago, The Organic Food & Wine Deli opened its doors in Melbourne’s city hub. It’s founder and operator, Jeanette Taylor, had worked in restaurants across the world, and this experience formed her knowledge of good, ‘real’ food. Which, in her experience, was completely organic.
With a venue to showcase her passion for organic produce, Jeanette was able to turn a new enterprise into a Melbourne Institution. Nestled right in the centre of Degraves st, arguably the epicentre of Melbourne’s laneways. The organic food and wine deli continues to deliver fresh, healthy, organic meals that keep their loyal customers extremely happy.
Switching over to a completely plant-based, vegan menu over 12 months ago, there has been only admiration and an increased sense of loyalty to this cornerstone of Melbourne’s cafe & deli community.
But if you thought the focus was only on food, then you would be interested to know that the walls are covered in ‘biopaint’, the shelves are low emission plantation timber. All of the takeaway containers are organic, the shopping bags are sourced ethically, from a human and animal perspective and the coffee is fair trade and part of the rainforest alliance. The Organic Food & Wine Deli also support local communities by donating all food waste to the homeless.
It is this thoughtful, compassionate belief system that continues to attract supporters to the deli, not to mention the phenomenal food.
There is a wide range of sandwiches, wraps, pies, curries, soups, salads, burgers, nori rolls, cakes and much more on offer. The toughest part is choosing from the extensive options.
If you have an intolerance, fear not, as The Organic Food & Wine Deli cater to you. With gluten-free pies, fodmap friendly soups and plenty more, you can take literally anyone here and they will be not only happy but entirely satisfied.
A highlight is the vegan pies, gluten-free or not, they are savoury and full of a range of delicious fillings.
