The Rochester Hotel, or as it is affectionately known, The Rochey is an institution in Fitzroy. You can expect to find your traditional dive bar feel with plenty of space for large groups, a roaring fire, and a large outdoor space that you can bring your pets into. Bringing that traditional pub feel with burger nights and parma nights, but always seeming to be reinventing itself in the kitchen. The changes coming regularly to keep their menu updated and fresh with different cuisines. The new menu swings between traditional pub food and Spanish cuisine. You can get your traditional Parma but also paella and there’s a lot to love about this new composition of food.
It would be a crime not to talk about the eggplant Parma immediately. The chef prepares this in a very unique way, layering thin slices of eggplant and vegan cheese in a terrine style and then baking it until golden and crispy. They then cut a large slice and place it on your plate with fries, rocket, and the chef’s traditional sugo that has been cooked over a number of hours to reduce down to the perfect taste that you remember from every parma done right. It is one of the best eggplant palmers you will have and it just happens to be completely gluten-free and vegan.
To note also is a chargrilled cauliflower with a miso emulsion, crispy soy pepitas, and pickled shallot‘s scattered on the top. The chargrilled cauliflower gives a beautiful burnt sensation, while the miso pulls these flavours together perfectly.
The vegetarian paella can also be made vegan very easily and comes with a number of grilled corn on the cob, the perfect dish for winter nights while sipping some wine.
They just happened to have mulled wine on offer at the moment during winter and it’s the perfect accompaniment for your Parma or any other dishes.
